We are pleased to announce that our team was ranked the #1 Team on the Eastern Shore for 2009. We raised a total of $14,100 surpassing PRMC and Perdue placing us into 1st place for the first time ever!!

The 2009 Salisbury March of Dimes Walk took place on Sunday, April 19th at 10:00 am. The weather turned out to be great that morning, in the 60's and the sun was shining. Cato had a group of 13 walkers representing our team in the 5 mile walk. Our walkers raised $1,200 for the day of the walk. Two Cato employees participated in checkpoint #2 on the walk route. Thanks to everyone that participated in March for Babies.

Our restaurants sold beanie babies over the past couple of months and our convenience stores sold baby blocks. An incentive was put in place that any employee that raised over $500 would receive a day off with pay. We had 6 individuals that accomplished this goal:

  • Christian Wiles - Westover Goose Creek
  • Donna Mountz - Felton Goose Creek
  • Heather Vanderven - Felton Goose Creek
  • Verna Ricketts - Selbyville Goose Creek
  • Kristina Torre - Cato Office
  • Russ Winters - Cato Office

March of Dimes Fundraising Efforts

Christian Wiles (left) and Shareena Ballard (right) both work at Westover Goose Creek.  Together they have raised $230 in the past two days for March of Dimes.  Christian sold an incredible 111 in one shift and 65 more the following day!  This is the highest one shift total ever, but Shareena who has sold 54 on her last two shifts says she is up to the challenge.  Christian celebrates her one year anniversary with the company on May 4th, and Shareena has been with us since December of 2007.

More extraordinary effort on behalf of the unborn and newborn!  Thank you!!

Cato participates in American Cancer Society Relay For Life Fundraiser

The annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life fundraiser finished with an overnight event at the Shorebird's Stadium on September 28th. With all the help and contributions from the CStores and Restaurants, Cato went far beyond its $10,500 goal and tuned in $17,025. This made us the third highest contributor for the event.

The canisters on the counters, hope bracelets, 50/50 drawings, Nascar cardboard cutouts and other store/restaurant/office raffles, a company yard sale, and bingo added up to $8000 of the collections. Corporate sponsorship from Shell Oil, Citgo, Beacon Technologies, Murphy Transport, Add Systems, Carl King Tire and Cato along with the individual contributions made up the rest.

Cato's Chris Mergner received honors of being the highest earning male for the entire event, raising $3500 in corporate sponsorship and will be awarded October 30th!!!

The night of Relay turned out to be a huge success. The Cato Team(s) went all out with the help of the Ocean City government lending us a lifeguard stand for our "Day at the Beach" theme. Many employees from the office, stores and restaurants showed up and enjoyed the evening and activities. Our drivers and service department were the hit of the night with their part in the "Miss Relay" contest, dressing up like women and going around collecting dollars from the thousands of people who attended. Cato's site earned the "Best Campsite" award for the event and we received many compliments.

The Cato Relay For Life Team wants to once again recognize all the CStore / Restaurant managers and staff for their time and effort in helping us make this a fun and successful event. Many people went out of their way to raise additional funds, and all this money is being put towards an important use in our community.
